Behavioral Counseling and Training

At RBAH, the entire Team is trained in utilization of low stress handling techniques for dogs and cats. We strive to make your visits as free from anxiety as possible. We use food rewards, positive association, pheromones, play engagement, mindful placement, and anti-anxiety medications when needed to enhance safety and positive experiences for the Pets, Families, and Pet Healthcare Team.

If you’re concerned about an aspect of your pet’s behavior, we can help. Many aggressive, fearful, or inappropriate behaviors in dogs and cats can be modified through a combination of desensitization and counter-conditioning. These techniques can have dramatic results when applied properly. In some cases, medication can also help. We also offer referral service to the expert Board Certified behavior team at the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine. Contact us for an appointment if you’d like to consult with our Veterinarians. Please keep in mind that certain patients require supplemental time, assistants, handling techniques and medications that can result in additional charges.

Want a healthy outlet for your dog’s drive? Dr. Lapova and James participate in multiple sports with their Dobermans and Shepherds, from AKC Obedience and Rally to Protection Sport Association training and trials, Barn Hunt, Conformation shows, and other performance events. We can help you find a suitable sport for your dog, recommend classes and resources, and complete a health and fitness evaluation with physical exam, labwork, etc.

There are several trustworthy training facilities in the region. Allegiance K9, West TN K-9 and others have been our partners in well-behaved dogs. Qualified trainers employ socialization techniques, training methods, and conditioning to help you raise a dog you want; decrease or eliminate unwanted behaviors; and help with advanced obedience, personal protection, and other service animal tasks. It’s never too late to contact a qualified trainer, and early start usually improves the outcome.
