Medicated Baths and Topical Therapy

Medicated baths can help ease many skin conditions in your Pet. If they suffer from seborrhea (a noncontagious condition that can cause skin to become dry and flaky or oily and scaly), a medicated bath can help alleviate the itching. Pets with allergies, flea infestations, secondary bacterial and yeast infections, and other skin issues may also find relief with a medicated bath. Topical therapy is well recognized in veterinary dermatology as a part of comprehensive management. Many conditions benefit from removing the dead skin cells, organisms, and debris from the skin surface, while improving skin barrier. Topical therapy aims to minimize the use of oral medications.

There are several topical products available. Active ingredients include antibacterial, anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory, moisturizers etc. Keep in mind that many products work best in combination, just like you would combine shampoo and conditioner for yourself. Let our Doctors know if you anticipate problems bathing your Pet at home, as we can schedule a medicated bath with one of our experienced Kennel Assistants. Use caution with over the counter products, especially flea and tick shampoos, products designed for humans, etc. They are often very drying, pH imbalanced, or even contain harmful ingredients that can cause seizures in pets.
