Here at Raleigh Bartlett Animal Hospital, we care about your dog’s health, longevity and quality of life. Maintaining proper body condition and fitness level helps them stay active, feel good and accompany you on walks, hikes and other fun bonding activities. Dr. Lapova and James have special interest in canine sports and fitness. Their own sport dogs stay in shape with proper diet, training and our amazing treadmill.
According to 2023 survey conducted by the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention, 59% of dogs and 61% of cats in the United States are overweight or obese. Obesity increases their chances of degenerative joint disease (arthritis), cranial cruciate rupture, endocrine disorders, cardiovascular disease, skin fold dermatitis, and other painful conditions.
We can help your Pet stay in optimal condition as you navigate diet and exercise options, learn how to evaluate Body Condition Score, etc. Many diets are designed to maintain appropriate condition for the animal’s life stage and activity levels. There are also diets for canine athletes as well as patients with obesity. Prescription diets provide significant caloric restriction while offering macro and micronutrient balance.
For dogs new to exercise routine and patients with obesity, low impact exercise is recommended. We love our professional grade slatmill! It offers indoor, climate-controlled exercise during all seasons, including brutal Tennessee summer heat. This is an excellent option for our Boarding guests, dogs who enjoy playtime and exercise, or anyone interested in trying their dog on the treadmill. We start by acclimating the patient to the equipment with positive association such as treats, toys and praise. Just like for humans, short intervals are recommended in the beginning, gradually increasing duration and speed from walking to trotting and running. We monitor the patients during exercise with observation, heart rate, and behavior parameters.
