Radiology (X-rays) Including OFA

During diagnostic investigation, we routinely use radiographs to help identify list of possible causes. We may use x-rays during a wellness exam to diagnose potential problems before they become serious.

X-rays provide valuable information about a pet’s bones, gastrointestinal tract (stomach, intestines, colon), respiratory tract (lungs, bronchi, trachea), heart, and genitourinary system (bladder, prostate, uterus). We use radiology alone or in conjunction with other diagnostic tools. Interpretation of radiographs requires great skill on the part of the Veterinarian. We offer consultation with board certified Veterinary Radiologist when necessary, as well as referral for diagnostic Ultrasound, CT scan, or MRI.

At RBAH, we offer hip and elbow evaluation through Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA.org). This invaluable tool helps breeders screen their dogs as a part of comprehensive health testing and breed preservation. Pet owners can take advantage of OFA service as well. We take significant care to properly position patients for accurate evaluation. This frequently requires light sedation and muscle relaxation. Screening females in season is not recommended. Patients must be 24 months of age for the full evaluation.

We are proud to offer full DR digital radiology (x-rays that are captured digitally rather than on film). This state-of-the-art technology allows us to provide you with a quicker diagnosis for your pet. It significantly reduces the amount of radiation and time than traditional x-rays.

To avoid a blurry image, pets need to remain completely still while an x-ray is taken. In some cases, we may need to sedate your pet or use short-acting general anesthesia.

Please don’t hesitate to contact us with questions about our radiology service or what to expect during your pet’s procedure.
